Leon Uris: A Biography
Leon Uris (August 3, 1924 – June 21, 2003) was an American writer of Jewish descent.
Born into a troubled family, with a mentally ill mother and a disillusioned Communist father, Uris dropped out of school and joined the army at the age of 17. Serving as part of a Marine Corps unit, he participated in combat actions in the Pacific during World War II.
After being discharged, he worked for a newspaper and also had his work published in Esquire magazine.
In 1953, Uris published his first novel, "Battle Cry," which drew on his military experiences and played a crucial role in shaping his identity as a writer.
The book's honest depiction of the hardships of service was combined with pride for his comrades in arms, their bravery, and loyalty to each other. The novel was enthusiastically received by readers and critics and was adapted into a film in 1954.
