Birth and Early Life
Jan Vermeer, one of the greatest painters of the Dutch Golden Age, was born in Delft on October 31, 1632.
He was the second child and only son of Reynier Janszoon, a silk weaver and art dealer, and Digna Baltens, a baker's daughter.
Apprenticeship and Influences
Vermeer was admitted to the Guild of Saint Luke on December 29, 1653, indicating he had undergone a six-year apprenticeship with a master painter.
While the identity of his teacher remains uncertain, scholars have speculated that he may have studied with Gerard ter Borch or Karel Fabritius, a student of Rembrandt. Vermeer's style was also heavily influenced by Pieter de Hooch, a genre painter who resided in
